The “Chennai” City Wall Project.

Posted on: September 10, 2008

You must know by now that we get involved in quite a bit of work related to the city. I believe that a city is a representation, collection and expression of the people living in it. If you walk into a city and cannot hear the voices, and expressions of its people, the city … aint quite alive. And I love having cities which are alive.

Mahesh Radhakrishnan, a friend of mine who is behind MOAD and is one really talented architect and I often meet to discuss about something we can do to solve these issues.

One latest such initiative is to setup something like this in Chennai. We are going to need some hands on this, but if and when it comes out, it will be quite something to boast about. What do you think?

This is an installation done in (Helsinski) Europe. We are planning to build the same at a fraction of the cost.

Chennai ? May be you have to look at some quieter cities. There will be thousands of people rolling hands on this πŸ™‚ Pondicherry will be a great place to try this. This will be great for tourism.

@Anil: Where’d be the fun otherwise? πŸ™‚ I’m sure the novelty would wear off eventually. You need a certain density of folks to make use of this… ofcourse we are doing a test launch in some secluded areas before it goes mainstream.

It would be quite cool if you guys pull it off. All the best!

And of course we could always replicate it in another place And count me in for any help(especially if you plan it for Pondicherry).

Seems awesome. Getting it built in-house?

Would love to create one for Delhi myself. Possible? πŸ˜‰

Hi Vijay,
Interesting thought! To start with why don’t we go for a physical wall interaction? even if you give digital wall, they are gonna paste a cinema /thalaivar poster on that πŸ˜‰ just kidding

Watch this adobe interactive video experiment, this is damn good

Pls do let me know if you need some support on this. I am in.

It will also be good to demonstrate sustainability by using solar energy for the power requirements. It will also create so much of awareness about using alternative sources of energy and give a really socially “aware” aspect to this project, which shouldnt end with being a “cosmetic” one.

Suchithra, Perhaps we can. But who said Solar cells are sustainable. The materials that go into making solar cells are becoming more and more rare. What are we going to do then? Really, we humans have a way of creating large scale mess-ups everywhere πŸ™‚

It is interesting to see Vijay trying to do something like many of my kind intend to do as per my understanding. I have always wondered the cutting edges in US and felt guilty why they are not yet in india. There could be reasons for some but for many, it is just the plain attitude of people resisting change that keep us years behind developed nations. Vijay, have you brought up this in chennai or stil the work in progress?
Also, regarding solar, I think we still have plenty of resources and alternate ways, Few months back, Scientific american published an article about new type of solar cells, with high output at cheaper cost and plans to establish big solar plants to power major parts of US. On the other end Japan is also trying to launch solar plates in space that could absorb much more solar (rather than lying in earth receiving much less solar radiation) and a way to send the enerty back to earth. So, solar would be probably the next best source for energy.
